    Blustery Snowy Day

I love the horses taking shelter from the winds on this harsh winter day in Lexington, KY.

  • Dawn over Looking Glass Rock

    Dawn over Looking Glass Rock

It was a bit of a drive to go from camping in Cataloochee Valley to photographing dawn over Looking Glass Rock from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was worth it. :)

  • Sunrise in the Smokies

    Sunrise in the Smokies

The mist that gave the Smokies their name makes for beautiful sunrises.

  • The Storm Passes

    The Storm Passes

Wonderful light display taken form the Foothills Parkway looking down onto Townsend, TN. Sometimes you really do get the perfect light for a shot. These rays lasted long enough that I ended up driving from point to point looking at different views. I don't think I've run into anything quite like it before. This is a section of a much larger panoramic. I didn't really know much about taking landscapes at the time, to I literally had my 200-400 at 200 mm and handheld a low continuous shooting across the view. It's not as sharp as I would like, but it worked better than I think it should have, now that I've learned a little bit more.

  • Smoky Mountains, Indeed

    Smoky Mountains, Indeed

I took this panoramic from the foothills parkway in east Tennessee. For some reason, I struggle getting landscapes I like off of that road. On this occasion the wonderful clouds and evening side light made my job easier.

  • The Masked Sunrise

    The Masked Sunrise

This somewhat famous tree is near the parking lot for Clinmans Dome and can often be seen against a perfect sunrise. On this morning the high clouds obscured the sun, but we got a nice lightshow nonetheless.

  • The Forest and the Trees

    The Forest and the Trees

The fog in the Smoky Mountains is nothing short of glorious. Especially when you get some nice warm morning golden hour mixed in with it. This one's from the far end of Cades Cove.

  • Mingo Falls

    Mingo Falls

This is a focus and exposure stack of two images. This may be the first waterfall image that I've taken that I actually like. That feels pretty good. :)

  • Just Passing Through

    Just Passing Through

I have tried several times to get a good photo of this tree. I have gotten hundreds of bug bites in the attempt and gotten lousy images for my trouble. Then, this guy walks by and completes the image. :)

  • Lighting Up the Sky

    Lighting Up the Sky

Time passes over the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville, NC. I love the combination of star, moon, car, and city lights all working together to show the passing of the night.

  • Giving Way to Winter

    Giving Way to Winter

Fall color and the skeleton of a tree ready for winter. Seems like a winning combination to me.

  • A Call to Breakfast

    A Call to Breakfast

I recently got to Cades Cove a little before 6 am hoping that they might open at dawn even though I knew it was probably 8 am. And yes, I ended up being the first car in line for when it opened at 8 am... But! I got to watch the fog rolling across the landscape at the entrance, found at least three nice tree in fog compositions, and see the horses get called in for their morning feeding. So, even when you don't get quite what you wanted, early morning are almost always worth it whether you're after wildlife or landscapes or just the joy of being in creation!

  • A view through the clouds

    A view through the clouds

A beautiful swirl of clouds surrounding the peaks near Cades Cove. This view is right on the loop road.

  • Time on the Mountain Top

    Time on the Mountain Top

Okay, near the mountain top. I took this one right at the end of the parking lot at Clingmans Dome. Rather than focus on the expanse of valley around me, I turned north and focused on the rock formation. I tend to thing putting the tip of a tree on Polaris is clichéd, but I like the way the rocks lead you into the spiral.

  • Night Over Newfound Gap

    Night Over Newfound Gap

Since someone stole my campsite Friday night, I went up to Newfound gap and did three star trails, a wide field astro shot of Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae, and a dawn shoot with three compositions. It was a long 40 hour day, but I got some nice images out of it. This one is 88 - 30 second frames stacked.
